This year, during the month of October, I will be writing at least 13 Halloween inspired short, short stories. This is the first.

Title: A Doll by Midnight
Prompts: Doll, Hiss, Time stood still in the cellar.

Mara hissed in frustration as the needle bit into her finger again. Dropping both the needle and the little rag doll she was crafting, Mara reached for the rag to her right. It was already spotted with blood, and it quickly gained another stain, as she pressed it to the growing bead on her finger.
This was taking to long, the doll needed to be completed by midnight. Mara quickly got back to work at the reminder. Sowing on the left arm of the doll, and starting on the right, she hoped she wouldn’t run out of time. It would be beyond aggravating if she had to wait another year to try this spell. With the limbs attached, Mara swiftly sowed on the black beads set aside for eyes. A few simple cross-stitches for a mouth follow soon after. Finally the little doll was complete, but with only minuets left until midnight, Mara had to hurry the next stage along.
Grabbing the bowl of herb paste she had already mixed up, Mara rubbed it the surface of the cement of the cellar floor. Then drew a chalk circle upon it. This would contain the magic until it settled. Then Mara placed the doll in the center.
A quick check of her watch, told her it was time. Anticipation replaced her anxiety, as Mara said the words of the spell; that done, she lent forward and breathed onto the doll. Magic tingled in the air. Time seamed to stand still in the cellar. Mara held her breath. And then, just as her hope was fading, the little rag doll twitched. Another twitch, and another, and then, with its movements becoming more and more fluid and natural, the doll stood up. It looked around with its black bead eyes, turned to Mara, and bowed.

Subject:	Hawks!

So for the last month or so we have had a pair of Sharp-shined/Coopers Hawks in the area. They fed in our back yard tree a few times and were spotted a couple blocks' distance in either direction. Now, at this very moment, there are FIVE hawks in the back tree. I, of course, took some pictures and video which I will post later. I am just so excited!
